I dunno that a WAP11 is going to be that much of an improvement over a DWL-1000AP.. What are you trying to improve: speed, range, features ? You may be able to increase the range by adding an external antenna. Here's some fairly crude instructions on how to replace the MMCX (I think) that goes to the folding antenna with an N connector: http://www.seattlewireless.net/index.cgi/DlinkAccessPointComments You can always use a pigtail that matches the connector on the folding antenna (as I said, I think it's an MMCX) - use this to connect to some third-party antenna (the exact one depends on the area you wish to cover and the $$ you're willing to spend.) Examples include: http://www.superpass.com/2400-2483M_RE.html http://www.cushcraft.com/thumbs.asp?id=1 http://www.maxrad.com/_2ghz-6ghz.sht http://www.antennasystems.com/broadband.html#anchor932487 http://www.hyperlinktech.com/web/antennas_2400.html I'm sure a few minutes spent with google will return more options. What do you want to improve? If you just want to do range, an external antenna may help.. with an AP-1000, you have to take the case apart and hack in an external antenna connector.. just read Andy's post, he gives the link on how to do it. Let us know what you're trying to improve, and we should be able to help. :) > Nate, not sure if you remember me, I worked with you during the > Madmouse days. Free 802.11 at Dunn Brothers? Cool, nobody filled me in. :) I don't know of many local places doing free 802.11 yet -- that's kind of one of the things I'd like to see TCWUG members providing, eventually. The guys at BAWUG/NYCWireless/SeattleWireless are very good at finding members in buildings overlooking coffee shops and things like that, and having the members throw up a 15dBi grid antenna pointed at it so the shop gets covered. Very cool, and I'd love to see the same thing from us. Eventually, I'm planning on picking up another 8dBi omni, and throwing it on an open access point on the roof of my house. Haven't decided if I want to use NoCat or anything like that to limit access, though.. it would be kind of cool to set up a central tcwug authentication server and make everyone who wants to use our network sign up for an account. -- Nate Carlson | Phone : (952)943-8700 http://www.real-time.com | Fax : (952)943-8500 From troy.johnson at health.state.mn.us Fri Mar 8 10:50:01 2002 From: troy.johnson at health.state.mn.us (Troy.A Johnson) Date: Tue Jan 18 11:35:40 2005 Subject: [TCWUG] List of free access points? I guess the usual suspects will carry stuff: best buy micro warehouse Unless you think you might be returning it, I'd figure out what to buy and get it mail-order, myself. Most of the D-Link stuff seems to have very limited performance/range. Linksys is better, but not by a great deal. I've had good experiences with the SMC 7004 AP, it seems to have good performance/range. Haven't heard great things about their PCMCIA cards. There is a zcomax PCMCIA card with an RP-SMA connector that makes adding an external antenna easy, the XI-300. Beware, the XI-300B does not have the antenna jack. Lucent/Orinoco/Agere/ PCMCIA cards are good performers with a tiny antenna connector. Cisco cards are stellar, if you can find one in your price range - check you're getting one with an antenna jack, though. With any of the APs that you might buy, be sure to flash them to a more recent version of the firmware from the suppliers web page, because out-of-the-box, most of them will crash on you regularly (Lucent, Cisco and Apple are mostly expempted from this hall of shame..) The difference between having the built in antenna vs an external antenna with some real gain is enormous. On my way to work with just the orinocco card, i grabbed 5 access points; whereas with the 8db omni i grabbed 50! The pigtail from the orinocco card to N male or female costs $22 (www.fab-corp.com) I've already broke one but the guys at fab-corp said it was defective and are sending me a new pigtail. I haven't been using the card in linux, so maybe someone else can fill this part in. It works very well in Windoze with netstumbler. The next project is getting it to work with kismet. Which brings up one of the bad points about the card.. I guess most of the programs written to capture packets need the prismII chipset. I think i'm gonna go grab one of those today. Be advised that these are light duty connectors, so be very careful connecting and disconnecting things and try not to stress the connectors physically. What kind of external antenna do you want to attach ? Some of the smaller "range extender" antennae can be ordered with the mating connector already attached. Linux support is good, but there's multiple flavours. Check out: http://www.hpl.hp.com/personal/Jean_Tourrilhes/Linux/Orinoco.html I'd recommend the orinoco_cs driver. Several distros still default to using the older wvlan_cs driver. Lots of the snoopier tools are based on the Intersil Prism chipset (used by zcomax, linksys, smc, etc etc.) This chipset is quite different from the one used in the Orinoco cards (which use the "Hermes" chipset.) Again, it comes down to what you want to use the card for. -- andyw@pobox.com Andy Warner Voice: (612) 801-8549 Fax: (208) 575-5634 From andyw at pobox.com Fri Mar 8 13:52:01 2002 From: andyw at pobox.com (Andy Warner) Date: Tue Jan 18 11:35:42 2005 Subject: [TCWUG] Local place to buy good cards In-Reply-To: ; from natecars@real-time.com on Fri, Mar 08, 2002 at 11:33:59AM -0600 References: <20020308111914.B31801@florence.linkmargin.com> Message-ID: <20020308135126.E31801@florence.linkmargin.com> Nate Carlson wrote: > [...] > XI-300 is actually a RP-MMCX card (I've got one sitting next to me).. We have cat5 in the walls here. So I really don't need to have wireless in the house. I can access the (DSL) network from any room, upstairs or downstairs. Which is fantastic. When ricochet was still around, I used that. So I could be at the coffee shop or on the patio or at my clients, etc and get access. I really miss that convienence. Since its going to be a long time before Aerie networks > re-opens the market here, I wanted to get my own set up up and running and > maybe share it. Ah. Now I get it, sorry for being dense. You need two things: o An access point. This bridges packets between your ethernet and wireless clients (laptops, atc etc.) The access point acts as central hub for a wireless LAN. Examples include: o Agere RG-1100 http://www.orinocowireless.com/template.html?section=m59&page=3038&envelope=95 o Apple Airport http://www.apple.com/airport/ o Linksys WAP-11 http://www.linksys.com/Products/product.asp?grid=22&prid=157 o and many others o Wireless card in your laptop. Again lots of vendors, follow the other thread on TCWUG for discussion/recommendation. 802.11b is a standard, so you don't need to get the AP and the card from the same vendor. You'll create your own wireless network around the access point. Whether this reaches the coffee shop is something you'll have to experiment with. If there's a lot of bricks & mortar between your apartment and the store, it'll take more work. You *may* have to get as involved as putting an external antenna on the access point, and experimenting until you get the signal coverage you desire. At some level this becomes basicly a black art, so without you divulging way too many specifics, it can be hard to predict. Since you want wireless on your patio anyway, buy some stuff and start experimenting. Most vendor's client software comes with an application that shows how strong the signal is, so you can walk around and experiment (when you get paid for it, you can call it a "site survey" :-)) If you want this to be open access, you'll have to think about how you want your network setup from a security standpoint, otherwise anyone will simple have access to your ethernet. This may be OK with you, I don't know. > So what are you guys reading to get you to this point or were you all just > born with some inherent wireless knowledge?? ;) Some good resources on the net might be (in no particular order): http://www.oreillynet.com/topics/wireless/802.11 http://www.80211-planet.com http://www.practicallynetworked.com/ http://80211b.weblogger.com http://bengross.com/wireless.html http://www.personaltelco.net/ http://nocat.net/ http://www.seattlewireless.net/ http://www.bawug.org/ http://www.nycwireless.net/ There are about a zillion mailing lists you can join too, the signal to noise ratio and techncial content are variable, but if you've got the time to lurk a lot of information (and *dis*information) can flow past you. That would be grab, as in "walk over to aisle 3, and pick one up" in your case ? :-) :-) The Orinoco cards don't do well at either monitor mode or promiscuous mode, which is what a lot of the snoop/crack programs need. I believe that agere removed/hid/crippled support for these modes in recent firmware loads. If you go back far enough (6.x, I think) to pick up these modes, you also pick up other undesirable bugs.. It's not clear whether they did this because they wanted to remove the feature, or if they just needed the space (perhaps someone else on the list has heard more about this.) In contrast, Prism-based cards work fairly well in monitor or promiscuous mode. The developers of the wlan-ng driver did not put it in the last release (0.1.13), but there's a patch that supposedly adds promiscuous mode to it. o Latest wlan-ng driver: ftp://ftp.linux-wlan.org/pub/linux-wlan-ng/linux-wlan-ng-0.1.13.tar.gz o promiscuous patch: http://www.shaftnet.org/~pizza/software/0132-promisc-v23.diff I've not tried this patch myself yet, I only read about it this morning.. Kismet may need monitor mode to get access to the 802.11 headers, and I think that mode is well supported in the vanilla 0.1.13 driver. The other 3 are pretty nice.. about > equal range, etc.. Boy, I can second that! I have burned weeks trying to get the D-Link DWL-650 Prism2 based card to work correctly with any flavor of Linux. No can do. Firstly, the card lies about what PCMCIA power supply voltage it should get... it tells the platform it should have 3.3v but it doesn't work for beans at the voltage. There's some secret voodoo to do to the driver to get it to ignore the 3.3v request and use 5v instead-- which helps a little... but even after that, the card will die after random periods of time and/or activity. You can try the wlan-ng driver from Absolute Value Systems but once you put that on the platform, then the other drivers (orinoco_cs for example) get hosed and the Orinoco cards won't work anymore. The Absolute Value driver seems to want to be the ONLY wireless LAN driver on the machine which I find very annoying. I have absolutely no complaints about Lucent Orinoco cards in the Linux world... along with the orinoco_cs driver. They just work... and work well. cje -- Chris Elmquist | mailto:chrise@pobox.com | http://www.pobox.com/~chrise From blutgens at sistina.com Tue Mar 12 14:38:01 2002 From: blutgens at sistina.com (Ben Lutgens) Date: Tue Jan 18 11:35:43 2005 Subject: [TCWUG] Local place to buy good cards In-Reply-To: <20020312143126.F1508@n0jcf.net> References: <20020308192112.GB31088@fandre.com> <20020312143126.F1508@n0jcf.net> Message-ID: <20020312203725.GB23882@sistina.com> On Tue, Mar 12, 2002 at 02:31:26PM -0600, Chris Elmquist wrote: > >I have absolutely no complaints about Lucent Orinoco cards in the Linux >world... along with the orinoco_cs driver. As far as I know, it's probably the most full featured wireless sniffing package you will find anywhere. We own copies of Etherpeek, and it's by far the best sniffing program around, although lately they've been adding lots of fluff for the marketing dept (stupid gauges and crap). Ethereal is probably the best you'll find for free software, but I don't know if anyone has made it work with a wireless card. I think the only cards you can put in promiscuous mode under linux are prism based cards. Although, that's how it used to be. If you have the money to spend on Airopeek, and do enough sniffing, it's probably worth the money. Someone stole my Aironet card though, so my testing of it was cut short. :( Jay > -----Original Message----- > From: Richard T Nechanicky [mailto:v0key@yahoo.com] > Sent: Tuesday, March 12, 2002 11:42 PM > To: tcwug-list@tcwug.org > Subject: [TCWUG] Airopeek Question > > > Hello all...I wanted to say hi to the group as I just > joined. > > I have a Quick question on how many of you folks have > used Airopeek, and whether anyone thinks it is a good > investment for the $2500 annual subscription (any > Pros/Cons?). References: Message-ID: Jacque, Depends on how much you already know. Generally speaking, Wireless networking is fairly easy to do for a home setup. A good place to start is to visit a few popular 802.11b sites to learn more about how the technology works. Most of the stuff is pretty straight forward networking except the antennas. If you can setup a basic home lan, you should be able to setup a wireless LAN. Most wireless hardware out of the box require simple software configurations and it works. Here are some sites: DIY home networking has a section on 802.11b http://www.homenethelp.com/802.11b/index.asp Practically networks is also a good site. The FAQ/Troubleshooting guide is helpful. http://www.practicallynetworked.com/support/troubleshoot_wireless.htm Another Intro to Wireless Networking http://www.infopeople.org/howto/intro_wireless.html In your particular case, you probably are going to need a simple directional antenna. You can point it in the direction of the coffee shop and depending on the height, angles etc you might get lucky and be able to get a good connection inside the coffeeshop. There are a lot of science + art that goes in antenna design, selection, mounting and setup. You probably don't need to worry about the technology behind it ( I am a EE and still don't fully understand the complexities of wave propagation etc). You have to work hands-on with RF technology for a long time to full grasp it. It really becomes an art, after you are done reading the theory. There are number of technician types and radio hackers in this group who have been tinkering with Antennas and radios for a long time. They can certainly help you with antenna/propagation issues. Andy Warner...would you please step up...;-) and shine some light on the secrets of antennas. I don't know if the above helps, but if you have a specific question, please ask. Otherwise I will have to use one of my Orincos which are about 100mW...The only reason I am getting the 100mW is because that was all the vendor had below 250mW and it was thrown in at no additional cost (i.e. package deal). Do you have the PCM series or the LMC series ? Nate has first hand experience hooking the LMCs to external antennae; you have to get out the soldering iron to add a pigtail to the PCM series, I believe. > You may be able to help me jerry rig it, and if so by > all means please do (this is something I would like to > get out of this mailing list). Otherwise I will have > to use one of my Orincos which are about 100mW...The I thought Orinocos had a lower output power. One of mine has the FCC ID: IMRWLPCE24H, hunting that down through the FCC web site leads me to a test report: http://gullfoss2.fcc.gov/prod/oet/forms/blobs/retrieve.cgi?attachment_id=226897&native_or_pdf=pdf Page 28 states that the output power is approx 14dBm, or around 25mW. Are there high power Orinoco cards out there ? The FCC ID for the Cisco cards is: LDK102040 and the reports confirm the 100mW output power. > only reason I am getting the 100mW is because that was > all the vendor had below 250mW and it was thrown in at > no additional cost (i.e. package deal). > > Let me know if you (or anyone else out there) knows > how I can hook the cisco card up to an external > antenna. Assuming that it's not a LMC-series card (in which case it's a MMCX [thanks to Nate for that detail], and a simple pigtail is all that is needed), you may want to try and retro-fit a pig-tail to a PCM series card, but it'll probably be an irreversible change. Here's a photo of a Linksys card doctored in this manner: http://www.geocities.com/andyw_lala/wpc11-pigtail.jpeg Internally, many PCMCIA cards have a tiny connector before the built-in antenna, which is used during manufacturing test. You can remove this connector and solder a pigtail directly to the card as shown in the photo above. I've not done this mod on a Cisco card. Violates the FCC type approval, but if you're trying to make a piece of test equipment, and it'll still be within the rules, I don't see a problem. YMMV. You sound like you know your way around this kind of system well enough, but the biggest problem people have at these extended ranges is building a balanced system, IMHO. Your task is doubly complex because it sounds like you cannot modify the other end of the link, so any gain you add to your tx path needs to be added to your rx path also. It is easier to add tx gain than useful rx gain, so you might end up being rx limited. The orinoco cards seem to be very well balanced, the output power matches the rx sensitivity well. Can you tell us more about what you need to accomplish for your clients from 12-15 miles out ? It is self explanatory. I have attached a copy of this rule for your convenience. Regards, Joe Dichoso >>> "Pete Starnes" 03/19/02 01:26AM >>> Mr. Dichoso, I am writing in an effort to clear up some confusion within the Wireless Internet Service Provider community. As you may know, with the advent of unlicensed 2.4ghz wireless lan systems a new industry was born. Many ISP's are now deploying wireless internet access systems in point to multipoint environments, primarily in rural areas. Many vendors are now marketing amplifiers, antennas, transmitter/receivers (wireless lan cards) and other devices to this market. The confusion I am trying to clear up has to do with external antennas. It is possible to purchase amplifiers and antennas separately from the wireless lan cards. Many manufacturers, resellers, vendors, ISP's, and end users have been deploying systems based solely on the Max EIRP limits set forth in the Part 15 rules. This is contradictory to my interpretation of the Part 15 rules. It is my understanding that any antennas used must be part of a certified system. This is not what is happening in the real world. Many WISP's are purchasing wireless lan cards from one source, cable from another source, and antennas from yet another source. Their thinking is that as long as the EIRP of the system does not exceed the limits set forth by the FCC, that this is acceptable. My understanding is that a transmitter must be certified WITH any and all antennas that it is being used with it as part of a system and that the entire system must be sold complete as a kit. Could you please verify my understanding of the rules so that I may pass it on to the WISP community. Thank you, Pete Starnes President NEATO (a) Except as otherwise described in paragraph (b) of this section, no person shall use, manufacture, sell or lease, offer for sale or lease (including advertising for sale or lease), or import, ship, or distribute for the purpose of selling or leasing, any external radio frequency power amplifier or amplifier kit intended for use with a Part 15 intentional radiator. (b) A transmission system consisting of an intentional radiator, an external radio frequency power amplifier, and an antenna, may be authorized, marketed and used under this part. However, when a transmission system is authorized as a system, it must always be marketed as a complete system and must always be used in the configuration in which it was authorized. An external radio frequency power amplifier shall be marketed only in the system configuration with which the amplifier is authorized and shall not be marketed as a separate product. (c) Only the antenna with which an intentional radiator is authorized may be used with the intentional radiator. ___________ The ISP-WIRELESS Discussion List ___________ To Join: mailto:join-isp-wireless@isp-wireless.com To Remove: mailto:remove-isp-wireless@isp-wireless.com Archives: http://isp-lists.isp-planet.com/isp-wireless/archives/ ----- End forwarded message ----- -- andyw@pobox.com Andy Warner Voice: (612) 801-8549 Fax: (208) 575-5634 From andyw at pobox.com Thu Mar 21 09:43:25 2002 From: andyw at pobox.com (Andy Warner) Date: Tue Jan 18 11:35:44 2005 Subject: [TCWUG] Turning Silver into Gold?
